Sugar addicted

My grandmother was a rock star! She kept chocolate in her bedroom, in the only closet with a key. For me and my brother and for herself, of course. “Grandma, do you have something sweet?”, was a question, that always got chocolate for an answer. “My dearest golden grandma, do you have something sweet?”, was then a question, that ensured a sparkle in the eyes and stock of sweets in the future. Only when she became older and weaker, chocolate was no longer available at all times. It is understandable that my grandmother, for who an orange when she was a child was a holy thing, wanted to give us all that she lack in her childhood. Chocolate was the way she showed us unconditional love and I can’t blame her for that. But when I’m rethinking the past, it was the omnipresence of the chocolate in my childhood an introduction into sugar addiction later on.

Sweet, but healthy

Maybe I’m exaggerating when I call it addiction, but the fact is, I was too often reaching for sweet, when I felt cravings. Old habit, obviously. And bad, as well. Throughout years I started to notice, that sweets are not helping me and are rather decreasing my energy. I had no idea how to step out of this circle.

Recently Maja introduced me to a sugar free desserts world. Still sweet and full of calories, but nutritional! Instead of white refined sugar we mixed avocado with raw cocoa and honey, sometimes dates, sometimes even both. With cottage cheese we used raisins. Those things are full of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants to name just few.

At about the same time Ruby introduced to me magic beans, vegan capsules filled with dehydrated fruits, veggies and berries. Enlightenment does not come during night. I give more and more attention to food and I figured out that my carvings don’t need to be solved with white sugar. Combination of better nutrition and substantial help of magic beans did help me to avoid sugar almost completely.

Sweet Bali

Bali offers abundant variety of healthy sugar free desserts. Meanwhile I’m making a list of sugar free desserts places in Canggu area, I’m still spending the most of my time in Matcha Cafe Bali. It is my Balinese shelter on busy mornings or quiet rainy afternoons surrounded by rice fields and most importantly – dessert assortment. Sugar free, gluten free, vegan and those which don’t avoid any particular ingredients. Connected with outer world, sipping refreshing pressed orange with ginger, I do talk to my friend in cold Switzerland and feast on beet root mousse. I’ve heard it makes us happy. Beet root. We could call this beet in combination with raw cocoa, honey and crushed walnuts Bali bomb. Beet root as well as chocolate contain tryptophan amino acid. It causes reactions which makes us happy. Eating double happiness it is!

Even though I’m avoiding sugar as the devil avoids the cross, that still doesn’t mean I don’t consume it at all. I do (very) rare exceptions, for exmaple, when my mom makes me studl with less sugar especially for me. Or when the owner of Matcha Cafe Bali brings me delish tart to taste before it gets into the menu. Coconut-matcha soft centre on the caramel pasta resting atop of almond butter and raw cocoa crunch and all together topped with vegan Nutella of only almonds and raw cocoa is simply the thing worth of sin! In Matcha everyone is welcomed, those in search of a delicious sin or those who stay faithful to their diet. I’m there one way or another.

Chocoholic forever

There is this photography, when I was about one year old, I sit on a potty and obviously taking a poop with a big chocolate in my hands and melted choco mud all around my face. When I was older, 5 years I think, I needed to drink syrup against cough in the middle of the night. I suggested to my mom to say to me she has a chocolate, Milka chocolate of course, for me or at least pretend to have one in order to wake me up easily. Once chocoholic, forever chocoholic! I still love chocolate and all kind of desserts, but in world of thousand alternatives I’m choosing those which have some nutritional value. However, here we have mango season and the best dessert that can be offered to me at the moment it’s big-fat-juicy mango!

Sočno: prehranjevanje (skoraj) brez sladkorja

Zasvojenost s sladkorjem

Moja stara mama je bila zakon! V svoji spalnici, v edini omari s ključem, je skrivala tudi čokolado. Zame in brata, pa tudi zase. “Mama, imaš kaj sladkega?”, je bilo vprašanje, ki je dobilo čokoladen odgovor. “Moja ljuba zlata mama, imaš kaj sladkega?”, pa je bilo vprašanje, ki je zagotovilo iskro v očeh in vse nadaljne zaloge sladkega. Šele, ko je postala šibkega zdravja, je bilo pri hiši manj čokolade. Povsem razumljivo je, da je stara mama, za katero je bila pomaranča v otroštvu sveta stvar, želela svojim vnukom nuditi tisto, česar sama ni imela. Skozi čokoldao je izkazovala svojo brezpogojno ljubezen in prav nič ji ne morem zameriti. A ko takole razmišljam, je bila ta vseprisotnost čokolade tekom mojega otroštva uvod v zasvojenost s sladkorjem v odraslem življenju.

Sladko, a zdravo

Mogoče pretiravam, ko rečem zasvojenost, a premnogokrat sem posegla po sladkem, ko sem čutila, da mi nekaj manjka. Stara navada, očitno. Slaba tudi. Z leti sem začela opažati, da mi sladko prav nič ne pomaga, ampak mi samo vzame energijo. Pojma nisem imela kako izstopiti iz začaranega kroga.

Pred kratkim me je Maja uvedla v svet sladic brez sladkorja. Še vedno sladkih, se ve. Še vedno precej kaloričnih, kakopak. A hranilnih! Namesto belega sladkorja, sva tako v avokado poleg presnega kavava mešale med ali dateljne, včasih celo oboje. V skuto pa rozine. To so stvari, ki vsebujejo  minerale, vitamine in antioksidante, če naštejem samo nekaj ta glavnih vrednosti.

Istočasno mi je Ruby predstavila magične fižolčke, veganske kapsule v katere je ujeto dehidrirano sadje, zelenjava in jagodičevje. Razodetje se ne zgodi čez noč. Hrani namenjam več pozornosti kot nekoč in ugotavljam, da svoje poželjivosti, ki so ponavadi neke določene manjke v telesu, res ne rabim potešit z belim sladkorjem. Kombinacija malo boljše prehrane in izdatna pomoč magičnih fižolčkov sta skoraj popolnoma črtala sladkor iz mojega jedilnika.

Sladek Bali

Bali ponuja pestro izbiro zdravih sladic brez belega sladkorja. Medtem, ko delam seznam sladic Canggu območja, se vedno znova zatečem v Matcha Cafe Bali. Moje balijsko pribežališče na živahno jutro ali umirjeno deževno popoldne obdano z riževimi polji, in najpomebnješe – s pestro ponudbo sladic. Brez sladkorja, brez glutena, veganskih, pa tudi tistih, ki se ne izogibajo ničemur. Povezana s svetom, kozarcem osvežujočo hladne pomaranče in ingverja, se javljam v mrzlo Švico in zajemam mousse rdeče pese. Baje osrečuje. Rdeča pesa. Kombinacijo pese s surovo čokolado v prahu, medom in zdrobljenimi lešniki bi lahko ta mousse poimenovali tudi Bali bomba. Tako rdeča pesa kot čokolada vsebujeta tryptophan amino kislino (slovneski prevod mi je neznan). Ta sproža reakcije, ki osrečuje, torej jem dvojno srečo!

Čeprav se izogibam sladkorju kot hudič križa, to še ne pomeni, da ga sploh ne jem več. Delam (zelo) redke izjeme, ko mi mami speče domač štrudl z manj sladkorja posebaj zame, na primer. Ali pa ko mi lastnik Matcha Cafe Bali prinese v degustacijo torto, ki je še ni v ponudbi. Kokosovo-matcha mehka sredica na karamelni pasti, ki počiva na podlagi iz mandljevega masla in surove čokolade oblita z vegansko Nutello iz zgolj mandljev in surove čokolade je pač stvar vredna greha! V Matchi so dobrodošli vsi željni vrhunskega greha in seveda tudi vsi ta pridni, ki se držijo svojih prehranjevalnih navad.

Čokoholik za vedno

Obstaja fotografija, ko sem stara morda dobro leto dni, sedim na kahlici in očitno opravljam veliko potrebo z veliko čokolado v rokah in imam cel obraz namazan s stopljeno sladkobo. Ko sem bila malo starejša, menda mi je bilo 5 let, sem ponoči morala piti sirup proti kašlju. Mami sem predlagala, naj mi ponudi čokolado, Milko, da ne bo pomote oziroma naj se vsaj pretvarja, da mi jo ponuja, da se bom lažje vstala sredi noči. Enkrat čokoholik, vedno čokoholik! Še vedno obožujem čokolado in sladice vseh vrst, a v svetu tisočih alternativ izbiram tiste, ki mojemu telesu dajo še kaj hranilnih snovi in so zato še bolj okusne. Kakorkoli, trenutno imamo tukaj sezono manga in moja najljubša sladica v tem trenutku lahko kdorkoli ponudi, je velik-debel-sočen mango!
