I’ve skipped quite few Christmases at home. On the white sand under the palm trees I did forget a little bit about magic winter idyll and sometimes just muddy magic. First tropical Christmas I did not have any problems, but I would lie big time saying I don’t miss Christmas spirit. Not the whole package, though.

I do miss general cleaning, which is actually a foreword for holiday fever. I’m enticed by smell of Christmas dinner and the lightheartedness casualness of the Christmas morning. Above all I long for a moment when the entire family sits at the table and starts shooting caustic remarks to each other. It is typical way to show how much we care and love. Those remarks are sometimes crossing the limits, but then luckily we stop due to food coma.

I might refer to Christmas consumerism before, but it deserves another mentioning. I used to make presents myself, so I wasn’t going shopping during that time of the year. But it was that I urgently needed new underwear or something basic to bite in just in time the stores where the most shiny. In kitsch full of discounts I was experiencing many shocks observing full shopping trolleys. So you know, back then I did not know the background of palm oil industry, infamous oil, that is ingredient of most of the products in the supermarkets all over the world.

Palm oil

Palm oil deserves its own blog post, let me just mention, that the production of this particular oil means deforestation and extinction of many animal species. Note, that this is solely a rough sum up. Be curious yourself and check the ingredients in your favorite cookies or the most fragrant shampoo. Now you imagine, how I look at shopping trolleys nowadays.

Vegan inspiration

Often my mind wander off in oily thoughts and my heart is tearing apart knowing there are only few orangutans left. However, I’m lucky enough to meet people that make me believe (and forget about oil for a bit) in better future whit their jaw dropping visions and actions. With them I realize I’m not the lonely case trying to explain to fellow man there are better alternatives out there to use.

With Ruby (my Dutch neighbor) we met inspiring family, which resides among the rice fields South of Bali. They are Indonesian Chinese, as a matter of fact third generation of Chinese in Indonesia. Family moved six years ago from Bandung, Java island to Bali, changing quite conservative Chinese community for freethinking environment of a small island.

We have met in their little restaurant Kinoa, which promotes clean eating. Meaning they offer organic, non GMO food; eggs and meat are sourced by free range local farms. Parents are handling several business. Mother, the nutritionist specialized in organic chemistry, is the head of the restaurant where she does all kind of works that need to be done. Father designed their wooden house in Javanese style that is located behind the restaurant. Thirteen years old son works at full time barista, meanwhile fifteen years old daughter started her own Thyme & Caramel cakery business a year ago.

On a sunny day in rainy season, in the restaurant backyard beside permaculture garden, we did spend most of the time with daughter. Cake girl, Ariell. Fed up with tasteless cakes which are too sweet and full of artificial coloring, she started to experiment on her own. Her result are vegan and gluten free cakes of various flavors which she decorates with mysterious creme. The latter she colors with natural coloring and hand craft into artistic floral patterns. All the ingredients are natural and locally sourced. As refined sugar alternatives she uses coconut sugar and sugarcane syrup, which are healthier alternative to table sugar and are even containing few nutrients. Ariell is combining her passion for cakes with her life mission.

She and her brother were home schooled for the past couple of years. Their parents are encouraging them to develop, learn and grow in the direction of their own passions. Ariell  is doing it pretty impressive, sharing her sustainable life vision through her sweet creations and encourage her peers to follow their own dreams.

Bamboo dreams

Christmas for me is just another holiday, when the world goes mad and clam down at the same time. I certainly chose the calm part this year and only shop for cheese and booked bamboo villa with huge (volcanic) discount.

Mami me vonj božične večerje in brezskrbna ležernost božičnega jutra.

Palmovo olje

Palmovo olje si zaluži svoj zapis, naj le omenim, da produkcija tega olja pomeni krčenje deževnega gozda in izumiranje živalskih vrst. Naj poudarim, da je to le grob povzetek. Bodite radovedni in preverite sestavine v vaših najljubših keksih ter najbolj dišečem šamponu. Sedaj pa si predtavljajte, kako opazujem nakupovalne vozičke danes.

Veganski navdih

Slednjo obarva z naravnimi barvili in jo umetniško oblikuje v cvetlične vzorce.
